The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework requires at least one person with a current, full paediatric first aid (PFA) certificate to be on the premises and available whenever children are present, and on every outing. It also expects a member of staff with a full PFA certificate in the room whenever children are eating. Staff with level 2 or 3 early years qualifications gained since 30 June 2016 need a PFA qualification within three months of starting work to count in your ratios.

Assessment and certification
Assessment is practical and written. Your trainer observes each delegate in a series of practical assessments, including baby and child CPR with a defibrillator, choking, bleeding, fractures and anaphylaxis, and there are two short multiple-choice papers, one for each unit of the course.
On successful completion, every delegate receives the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF), valid for three years. The EYFS requires renewal every three years, so we recommend diarising requalification well before expiry, and we are happy to remind you in good time.

How long is the certificate valid?
Three years, and the EYFS requires paediatric first aid to be renewed every three years. Qualsafe also recommends a short annual refresher to keep skills sharp. We can remind you before your team's certificates expire.
What do we need to provide?
A room with enough floor space for practical work, chairs and ideally tables. The trainer brings baby and child manikins, defibrillator trainers, choking vests, auto-injector trainers and all course materials.
