Employers must tell staff the first aid arrangements: who the first aiders or appointed person are, and where the first aid equipment is. A printed notice by each kit is the simplest way to do it.
Enter your first aiders, kit locations and, if you have them, the defibrillator and nearest A&E. The notice updates as you type and prints on one A4 page.

Before you print
Check how many first aiders you need with the first aid needs calculator, so the notice reflects the cover your assessment calls for.
Confirm each first aider's certificate is in date. A first aider whose certificate has expired should not be listed until they requalify.
Put a copy by every first aid kit and one where all staff pass, and mention it in your induction for new starters.
First aiders or an appointed person?
An appointed person takes charge of the first aid arrangements, looks after the equipment and calls the emergency services, but is not a trained first aider. HSE suggests an appointed person may be enough in a small, lower-risk workplace. Most employers are better covered with at least one first aider trained in Emergency First Aid at Work, and we deliver the course at your venue for up to 12 staff.
Common questions
Do employers have to display a first aid notice?
The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981 require employers to inform employees of the first aid arrangements, including where the equipment, facilities and first aid personnel are. The law does not prescribe a notice, but HSE guidance describes first aid notices as a simple way to keep staff informed, alongside covering first aid in induction.
What should a first aid notice include?
The names of your first aiders or appointed person and where to find them, where the first aid kits are, and the emergency number. Many employers also add the defibrillator location, where the accident book is kept and the nearest A&E department.
Where should a first aid notice be displayed?
In places every member of staff sees, such as by each first aid kit, in the staff room and at reception. HSE guidance suggests at least one notice at each site, written so that all employees can understand it, including anyone with reading or language difficulties.
How often should the notice be updated?
Whenever the arrangements change: a first aider leaves, a certificate expires, a kit moves or a defibrillator is installed. Review it at the same time as your first aid needs assessment.
Can an appointed person go on the notice instead of a first aider?
Yes, where your first aid needs assessment shows trained first aiders are not needed. The appointed person takes charge of the first aid arrangements and calls the emergency services. Choose "Appointed person" as the role and the notice lists them under their own heading.
Is anything I type sent to Amber Training?
No. The notice is built in your browser. If 'Remember this notice on this device' is ticked it is stored in this browser only, so you can update it later. Untick it to forget the details when you leave.
