Dental practices are workplaces like any other under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981: the practice must provide adequate first aid for its staff, decided by a needs assessment. That duty covers everyone, including receptionists, practice managers and decontamination staff, not just clinicians.
Dental teams also have separate expectations for medical emergencies training, set out by the General Dental Council and in Resuscitation Council UK's quality standards for dental care. Workplace first aid sits alongside that; it does not replace it. We train your team in Emergency First Aid at Work on site, up to 12 people per session.
Practices usually focus on patient medical emergencies, and rightly so. The workplace first aid duty is easier to overlook: a receptionist who faints, a staff member who cuts themselves in the decontamination room, a colleague who collapses in the staff room. Your needs assessment should name who deals with those, and they need to be trained.
Non-clinical staff are often the gap. Reception and administrative teams may not hold any first aid qualification, yet they are frequently the first to reach a person who collapses in the waiting area. Training the whole team together closes that gap and gives everyone the same shared approach.
Inspectors and auditors look for evidence. Three-year certificates for every delegate and a clear record of who is trained make your workplace first aid arrangements easy to demonstrate, alongside your separate medical emergencies records.
