Who the course is for
This course is for staff who look after babies and children and need to act in the first minutes of an emergency. It suits holiday camps, sports and activity clubs, after-school and breakfast clubs, schools and crèches. Next Thing Education Camps in Hemel Hempstead has booked it with us three times to train its camp staff before each season.
It is not the full EYFS qualification. Nurseries and other early years settings need staff with the full 12-hour Paediatric First Aid course to meet the on-premises, outings and mealtimes rules. Our guide to full or emergency paediatric first aid explains which one your setting needs.
What the course covers
- The role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider
- Assessing an emergency and prioritising what to do
- A baby or child who is unresponsive and breathing normally
- CPR for babies and children
- Choking in babies and children
- Seizures
- Severe bleeding
- Shock caused by blood loss
Most of the day is hands-on, on baby and child manikins, and taught to the current Resuscitation Council UK guidelines. Assessment is by practical demonstration: the trainer observes each delegate during the day.

Emergency Paediatric First Aid: common questions
What does the Emergency Paediatric First Aid course cover?
The life-threatening emergencies with babies and children: assessing an emergency, an unresponsive baby or child who is breathing, CPR for babies and children, choking, seizures, severe bleeding and shock.
How long is the course?
One day: six hours of teaching and assessment, plus breaks, at your venue. A typical day runs from 10am to 4pm, on a weekday or a Saturday.
How much does it cost?
£645 per session for up to 12 staff, including trainer, equipment, certificates and travel. Travel within London and the surrounding counties is included; elsewhere in England, travel is confirmed with the agreement. The price is final and all-inclusive. No payment until your booking is confirmed.
What certificate do delegates get?
Delegates who pass receive the FAA Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF), awarded by First Aid Awards through Nuco Training. It is Ofqual-regulated (qualification number 603/0912/X) and valid for three years.
Is this course enough for a nursery under the EYFS?
Not on its own. The EYFS requires the person who must always be on the premises, the person on outings and the person in the room at mealtimes to hold a full 12-hour paediatric first aid certificate. Nurseries book the full two-day Paediatric First Aid course for those staff, and some add this course for other staff.
Who is the course for?
Holiday camps, sports and activity clubs, after-school and breakfast clubs, schools, crèches, and anyone who looks after children and needs to know what to do in the first minutes of an emergency.
How are delegates assessed?
By practical demonstration. The trainer observes each delegate performing baby and child CPR, dealing with choking, placing a child in the recovery position and controlling bleeding, on baby and child manikins.
