Who the course is for

This course is for staff who need to know what to do in the first minutes of a cardiac arrest or a severe allergic reaction, without taking a full first aid course. It suits offices that have installed a defibrillator, schools and nurseries, dental and clinic teams, hospitality and retail staff, and any workplace that wants more people able to start CPR while an ambulance is on its way.

It does not replace workplace first aiders. If your first aid needs assessment calls for first aiders, book Emergency First Aid at Work or First Aid at Work, both of which include CPR and defibrillator use. Our first aid needs calculator helps you work out which you need.

What the course covers

  • The role and responsibilities of the person helping
  • Checking for danger, response and normal breathing
  • The primary survey and calling for help
  • Adult CPR: chest compressions and rescue breaths
  • Using a defibrillator (AED) safely
  • The recovery position for an unresponsive casualty who is breathing
  • Recognising anaphylaxis
  • Using an adrenaline auto-injector

Most of the session is hands-on, on CPR manikins and a defibrillator trainer, and taught to the current Resuscitation Council UK guidelines. Assessment is by practical demonstration: the trainer observes each delegate during the session, and there is no written test.

CPR, Defibrillator and Anaphylaxis: common questions

What does the CPR, Defibrillator and Anaphylaxis course cover?

What to do when someone collapses: checking for danger and a response, the primary survey, calling for help, adult CPR, using a defibrillator (AED), the recovery position, and recognising anaphylaxis and using an adrenaline auto-injector.

How long is the course?

Three hours of teaching and assessment, plus a short break, at your venue. It can run in a morning, an afternoon or after work.

How much does it cost?

£415 per session for up to 12 staff, including trainer, equipment, certificates and travel. Travel within London and the surrounding counties is included; elsewhere in England, travel is confirmed with the agreement. The price is final and all-inclusive. No payment until your booking is confirmed.

What certificate do delegates get?

Delegates who pass receive the FAA Level 3 Award in Basic Life Support, Automated External Defibrillation and the Management of Anaphylaxis (RQF), awarded by First Aid Awards through Nuco Training. It is Ofqual-regulated (qualification number 610/5553/0) and valid for three years.

How are delegates assessed?

By practical demonstration. The trainer observes each delegate performing CPR, using the defibrillator trainer, placing a casualty in the recovery position and using a training auto-injector. There is no written test.

Does this course make someone a workplace first aider?

No. It covers life support and anaphylaxis only. If your first aid needs assessment calls for first aiders, book Emergency First Aid at Work (one day) or First Aid at Work (three days). Many workplaces add this course for staff who are not first aiders, so more people can start CPR and fetch the defibrillator.

We have just bought a defibrillator. Is this the right course?

Yes. Anyone can use a public access defibrillator, and it talks the user through each step, but people act faster and with more confidence when they have practised. We train on a defibrillator trainer that works like the real device.
