Who we typically train in Schools

A typical school booking is a primary school requalifying its designated first aiders in First Aid at Work over two days of half term, or training up to 12 teaching assistants and office staff in Emergency First Aid at Work on an INSET day.

Which first aid course does each member of school staff need?

The Department for Education's guidance, First aid in schools, early years and further education, asks every school to assess its first aid needs and provide enough trained staff for pupils, staff and visitors. In practice schools use four courses:

  • First Aid at Work (three days): designated first aiders who lead first aid across the school
  • First Aid at Work requalification (two days): designated first aiders renewing before their three-year certificate expires
  • Emergency First Aid at Work (one day): class teachers, teaching assistants, office, kitchen and site staff
  • Paediatric First Aid (two days, 12 hours): nursery and reception staff, required under the Early Years Foundation Stage

What school staff practise on the day

Every course is practical. Staff work in pairs and small groups with manikins, defibrillator trainers and dressings, and the scenarios are set in a school: the playground, the classroom, the dinner hall, the sports field and the school trip.

  • CPR and using a defibrillator, for adults and children
  • Choking in children and adults
  • Asthma attacks and severe allergic reactions, including using an adrenaline auto-injector
  • Seizures, head injuries, bleeding, burns and suspected fractures
  • Managing an incident until help arrives, and recording it afterwards

How an INSET day runs

Emergency First Aid at Work fits a single INSET day: six hours including breaks and lunch, at the times you choose, for example 9am to 3pm. The trainer arrives before the start to set up in your hall or a classroom with all the equipment. First Aid at Work and its requalification run over consecutive days, which is why many schools book them in half term, as Latymer All Saints did.

Each member of staff who passes receives an Ofqual-regulated FAA Level 3 Award certificate, issued through Nuco Training, emailed the next working day and valid for three years. You also receive a training record for your first aid file.

What schools ask before booking

Our trainers are fully DBS checked, and Jennifer Sani, our Lead Trainer, holds a safeguarding qualification alongside her first aid and teaching qualifications. Amber Training holds public liability insurance of £1 million and professional indemnity insurance. The price is fixed per session for up to 12 staff, so the figure the business manager approves is the figure on the invoice.

INSET days and half term

We run courses on INSET days, in half term and in the summer holidays, at your school, so cover and lessons are never an issue.

The right course for each role

Designated first aiders, class teachers, reception and nursery staff, and trip leaders each need a different level. We match the course to the role.

DBS checked, safeguarding trained

Our trainers are fully DBS checked, and our Lead Trainer, Jennifer Sani, also holds a safeguarding qualification.
