Who the requalification is for

The First Aid at Work Requalification is for first aiders who already hold the First Aid at Work certificate and need to renew it. First Aid at Work certificates are valid for three years. Rather than repeating the full three-day course, a qualified first aider can renew on a shorter two-day course that refreshes the syllabus and reassesses their skills.

It suits employers whose first aid needs assessment calls for fully trained First Aid at Work first aiders: higher-risk workplaces such as construction, warehousing, manufacturing and care, and larger organisations with designated first aiders. If your first aiders hold Emergency First Aid at Work instead, there is no shorter route: that course is renewed by retaking the one-day course.

When to requalify: the renewal timing rule

Renew ideally before the certificate expires, so there is no gap in your first aid cover. If a certificate has already lapsed:

  • Up to one month after expiry: the two-day requalification course is still open.
  • One to three months after expiry: whether the shorter course is enough is the employer's decision.
  • More than three months after expiry: the full three-day First Aid at Work course is needed.

Once a certificate expires, that person no longer counts as a qualified first aider until they requalify, so it is worth booking a few months ahead. Our first aid certificate checker works out expiry and renewal dates for each of your first aiders, and our guide to first aid certificate renewal and requalification explains the rules in more detail.

What the course covers

The requalification is a refresh of the First Aid at Work syllabus, with assessment. It revisits the emergency skills first aiders are most likely to need and the wider range of injuries and illnesses the full course covers, including:

  • ✓Secondary survey (head-to-toe assessment)
  • ✓Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
  • ✓Head and spinal injuries
  • ✓Chest injuries
  • ✓Burns and scalds
  • ✓Eye injuries
  • ✓Poisoning
  • ✓Anaphylaxis
  • ✓Heart attack
  • ✓Stroke
  • ✓Epilepsy
  • ✓Asthma
  • ✓Diabetic emergencies (hypoglycaemia)
  • ✓CPR, defibrillator use, choking, the unresponsive casualty, and bleeding and shock

Assessment is practical and written, as on the full course. The trainer observes each delegate in the practical work and there are short written assessments. Everything assessed is taught on the course.

How to book

The quote form does not have a separate requalification option yet. Choose First Aid at Work as the course and tell us in the notes that it is a requalification, with the number of first aiders renewing and their certificate expiry dates if you have them. We reply within 24 hours with a fixed price and dates.

The form shows the full three-day First Aid at Work price; your quote will be at the two-day requalification price. If your preferred dates are not selectable in the calendar, say you are flexible and put the dates in the notes.

More than 12 first aiders to renew? We run two or more sessions and send one quote. Sessions can run on weekdays or a Saturday. Between requalifications, the HSE strongly recommends a short annual refresher; we offer a half-day refresher on site, which keeps skills practised but does not issue a new certificate.
